The Sigma FP is yet another reason why Sigma should stop making cameras. Our intention is to look out for photographers since the photo world doesn’t really enjoy the same copyright protections shared by the music and video worlds. We understand that there are many new photographers out there, so we’re going to break this down in a straightforward way. They want you to give your RAW files away for free. While those like Unsplash try to blindside photographers with tactics and working with companies like Moment and Peak Design, RawShotz is going the next step. It’s a brand new stock image company that’s taking things further by violating the rights of photographers. An email came to the Editor’s inbox here at the Phoblographer the other day about this company.

“RawShotz was born out of a desire for designers and creatives to have access to free, untouched, raw images while giving professional and amateur photographers full creative attribution and unlimited digital storage,” is the line that caught my eye. Photographers need to do all they can to stop RawShotz from giving their RAW files away for free. Nevertheless, you’ll get slightly better performance in Adobe Lightroom. Capture One support for the Leica M10R still isn’t available, but you can edit the RAW files. But we’ve also just found C1 to be so much better. We test all our RAW files in Capture One 20 as industry manufacturers openly champion it over Adobe support. Leica champions Adobe Lightroom with editing, but the Leica M10R shoots the universal DNG file. We found a significant problem with the camera’s compatibility with Capture One 20. I got a ton of emails about this camera over time, and I’ve dealt with them accordingly. And that was the case with the Leica M10R. We’ve got a reputation for finding issues with lenses and cameras that no one else even bothers to look for. Amazingly, we stopped people from buying the Leica M10R. It’s only ever been our intention to report our findings. It’s never my intention to get people to not purchase a camera. The Leica M10R review we did when the camera first came out sent waves through the camera world. There’s also the customization of the work panel, which is more flexible than Adobe Lightroom. I’ve read countless reviews about how it gives them better results, especially when editing RAW files. I believe it was around the release of Capture One 8 when many photographers and image editors began to seriously consider it as an alternative to Lightroom.

Exporting a batch of 10 raw files to jpeg full resolution still tends to spike the CPU usage indicator even on my new M1 Mac Mini. Adobe Lightroom was (and still is) an excellent post-processing tool, but it continues to be known as a resource hog.

I don’t think there was a competing software with an image cataloguing workflow combined with powerful editing tools for many years later.

I started using Adobe Lightroom in 2008 (at least my catalogue says so). If you were worried Capture One couldn’t transfer the majority of your edits done in your Adobe Lightroom catalogue, say hello to Avalanche. For more stories like this, subscribe to The Phoblographer.
